Hot Water System: A Complete Maintenance Guide

Hot Water System A Complete Maintenance Guide

Hot water system have become very common nowadays; you would hardly find any of houses without them. They are available in different forms, based on your requirement you can choose the one. Well, merely having one of them in your house won’t solve the purpose, for them to operate efficiently in the long run, it becomes important that you must go for their proper servicing. It ensures the detection of any problem areas and its rectification along with regular upkeep so that it keeps on running efficiently in the long run.

Tips to Ensure Efficient Functioning of a Hot Water System

Adding insulation can significantly reduce heat loss. It can cut heat loss by up to 45% and lower water heating costs by around 9%.

Sediment often builds up inside the tank over time. Flushing the tank regularly helps improve efficiency and extends the system’s life.

You should also check the anode rod inside the tank. This rod prevents internal rusting. Replacing a worn-out rod costs much less than buying a new heater.

You can perform some of these maintenance steps yourself. However, only do this if you feel confident and understand the system properly.

Additional Useful Tips to Follow

The Easing Lever

You can improve system safety by checking the easing lever. This lever sits on top of the temperature-pressure relief valve.

Lift and lower the lever slowly and carefully. Hot water may discharge from the drain, so keep a safe distance.

If the valve works properly, raise the lever gently. Then check the water temperature using a thermometer.

If the temperature exceeds 50°C, contact a professional immediately to inspect your hot water system.

Pipe Insulation

Use 3/8-inch foam insulation that matches the pipe diameter. Slide the foam over both hot and cold water pipes. Cover as much length as possible.

This step helps prevent heat loss and reduces condensation during summer.

After placing the foam, seal it properly using tape.

If pipes lie within 6 inches of the flue, use a 1-inch thick fiberglass wrap instead. This ensures better heat resistance and safety.

Heater Insulation

Cut the insulating blanket to fit properly around the tank. Make space for pipes, controls, and the TPR valve.

Wrap the sides of the tank and seal the blanket using foil tape.

Do not cover the top of the heater.

For electric heaters, place an oversized insulation cap on top. Then secure the sides properly to complete the insulation.

Drain the tank and get rid of any sediments

Another way of maintaining the hot water system is by draining out all the water from the tank, dissolving the sediment and then opening the cold-water supply valve, do this till the time you see clean water coming from the hose. After this block the drain and refill the tank.

All these tips for maintaining hot water systems might look complicated and technical. However, if you understand them, they are very simple and can be easily implemented. As we have mentioned above, if you are not thorough with the cleaning process, you can go ahead and contact a professional for hot water system maintenance. They will ensure complete cleaning and maintenance of the hot water system.
